Harlan Crow paid the bill for roughly $100,000 worth of private school tuition for Thomas’s grandnephew (who Thomas was raising as a son).

Citizens for Ethics & Responsibility in Washington
John,

The Clarence Thomas ethics scandals just keep getting worse: On Thursday, ProPublica broke the news that Harlan Crow paid the bill for roughly $100,000 worth of private school tuition for Thomas’s grandnephew (who Thomas was raising as a son).

Taking this free tuition and not disclosing it is way beyond the pale, especially on top of the secret luxury travel and shady real estate deals. For any federal employee, failing to disclose these types of gifts would be unthinkable. For a Supreme Court justice, it’s even worse.

This is yet another unforgivable breach of public trust. We acted quickly and amended the complaint that we sent to the Department of Justice and Supreme Court to include Clarence Thomas’s newly revealed violations.

If all of the egregious misconduct we laid out in our complaint does not lead to a real investigation and a binding code of conduct and inspector general for the judiciary, it's hard to imagine what would.

We’re giving the fight for a more ethical court all we’ve got, and we truly appreciate your support. Let’s make this a turning point for the judiciary — and for our democracy.

Thank you,

Team CREW

John –

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife have accepted luxury vacations for 20 years from billionaire megadonors Harlan and Kathy Crow, including lavish private jet trips, yacht rides, and stays at luxury resorts – all of which Thomas failed to report as required. Now we also know Crow bought property from Thomas for more than $100,000, meaning his money flowed directly to the Supreme Court justice and his family.

Thomas did not disclose the gifts from Crow, or the fact that he sold property to Crow. That is simply unacceptable, and today we filed a complaint against Thomas for these blatant ethical violations – some of which may be crimes.

Justice Thomas’s acceptance of and failure to disclose these repeated, lavish gifts and shocking real estate sales not only undermines public trust in his ability to serve impartially on the Court, it undermines confidence in the Supreme Court as an institution.

John, Clarence Thomas must be held accountable. If you agree, please make a donation to support CREW’s efforts to impose consequences for Thomas’s corruption of our country’s highest court. →

We cannot overstate what a scandal this is for the Supreme Court. Clarence Thomas is living proof of the urgent need for stronger ethics rules.

While we push for meaningful judicial ethics reform, Thomas must not be allowed to get away with this blatant corruption.

When powerful people can buy access and support on important matters before the court, the public – and our democracy – suffer. That’s why we filed this complaint against Clarence Thomas today.

The highest court in the land should also have the highest ethical standards. We’ll keep fighting to make that a reality.
