I’ll be blunt: Extremist Republicans will stop at nothing until they’ve completely stripped women of control of their own bodies. GOP attacks on reproductive freedom have been methodical. Republicans have been building power in the courts and state legislatures for decades. As soon as the Supreme Court was stacked with right-wing judges, GOP-led state governments began passing one extreme abortion ban after another. They knew full well that those bills would be challenged, but that six ideologically extreme justices – half of whom were appointed by Donald Trump – would be willing to overturn Roe v. Wade and upend reproductive freedom for tens of millions of Americans. And that is exactly what they did.
Now, another front in their fight to restrict women’s fundamental rights has opened up: A Trump-appointed federal judge in Texas has issued a ruling that could ban mifepristone, the first of the two-step, safe, and long-approved medication treatments for miscarriage and abortion. This is yet another brazen move by the GOP to keep extremely important and necessary medical choices out of the hands of women and their doctors. And you can be sure they won’t stop there.
The GOP continues to try and steal our freedoms – and if this ruling from Texas is allowed to stand, what’s to stop any judge anywhere from taking away any medication?
We must continue to fight back. All of us. We cannot let anyone take away access to medication that Americans need and deserve. And it doesn’t matter if that person is wearing a suit, a dress, or black robes.
