John,
As of 12:01am on May 2nd, the Writers Guild of America went on strike for the first time in more than 15 years.
The strike was authorized by a historic 98% to 2% margin after the turn to streaming eroded writers' pay and job security.
Unlike network shows, streaming services use smaller writing staffs and tend to have shorter seasons leaving writers needing to work multiple jobs to secure a stable income. According to the Guild, inflation-adjusted pay for screenwriters has fallen 14% since 2018 and 23% for writer-producers.
Striking workers have reasonable demands including limits on AI use in scripts and pay increases. It’s up to us to remind the studios that without writers, they don’t have the shows that make them rich.
We're partnering with More Perfect Union and progressive organizations to show solidarity with the striking workers. Click here to watch More Perfect Union's video explainer about the strike. Then, send an email to the CEOs of Netflix, Amazon, Disney, and HBO Max to support the writers' demands!
