Here are some updates from the last few days.

Today, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) signed House File 3, the “Democracy for the People Act,” into law. The new omnibus elections bill is one of several pro-voting priorities advanced by Minnesota’s new Democratic trifecta this session.

Yesterday, two east coast states took steps to make voting easier. The Delaware Senate approved a constitutional amendment to allow no-excuse mail-in voting, while the Connecticut House passed a bill that would add 14 days of in-person early voting.

Also yesterday, a federal judge struck down part of a Kansas voter suppression law that prohibited individuals or organizations from sending personalized, early mail-in ballot applications with pre-filled information (such as the voter’s name or address) to registered Kansas voters.

On Tuesday, the defendants in a local redistricting case in Kansas appealed a district court decision that allowed the case to move forward. The defendants are continuing to assert that there is no private right of action under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
