As we celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we continue to be inspired by the representation and resilience of AANHPI communities. AANHPIs represent us at every level of government, including Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Vice President of South Asian descent; Ambassador Katherine Tai, the first Asian American U.S. Trade Representative; and a number of our alumni who are serving in state legislatures, city councils, and school boards across the country. They lead with their values, care and compassion, and a steadfast commitment to their communities, even in the face of persistent racism, harassment, and anti-Asian hate.

Title 42—a Trump policy that weaponized the COVID-19 pandemic to authorize the expulsion of migrants from the United States—is set to expire on May 11. As this day quickly approaches, it’s crucial that the U.S. government addresses the needs of asylum seekers and prioritizes a just and humane approach to immigration. As noted in this op-ed, some of the possible solutions could be investing in border resources to respond to humanitarian migration, protecting access to asylum, and increasing funding for legal services that support refugees.

ICYMI: Our CEO and President Ghida Dagher and one of our amazing alums, Raquel Terán, the former state senate minority leader and immediate past chair of the Arizona Democratic Party, wrote a powerful op-ed in The Arizona Republic about immigrant women in politics. Here are some of the top takeaways:

  • Women, especially women of color and immigrant women, face significant barriers when running for office.
  • Representation matters: When we support and uplift the voices of immigrant women, we ensure that the policies and laws we create are reflective of our diverse communities.
  • New American Leaders is playing a crucial role in providing the necessary training and support that enable immigrant women to break through these barriers and become powerful agents of change in Arizona and all across the country.
