This Issue: Florida approves E-Verify for some employers; House to vote on E-Verify/Border bill next week

Fri, May 5th

The Florida state legislature passed a bill this week requiring employers with 25 or more employees to use E-Verify to ensure that all new hires in businesses of that size are authorized to hold a job in the United States.

The expanded E-Verify requirement was a top priority for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) and expands the state's current requirement for state agencies. The effort was also led by State Rep. Kiyan Michael (R-Duval) and State Sen. Blaise Ingoglia (R-Citrus, Hernando, Sumter).

The E-Verify provision was part of a larger illegal immigration enforcement package that will also target illegal aliens who use fraudulent IDs and help fund other efforts to reduce the number of illegal aliens in Florida.

Florida's successful E-Verify effort comes just a week before the anticipated vote in the House of Representatives on H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, introduced by Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) and Tom McClintock (R-Calif.). The legislation is a top priority for House Republicans and, if signed into law, would end the ongoing border crisis and deter future illegal immigration by requiring most employers to begin using E-Verify within three years.

In addition to mandatory E-Verify, the legislation would reduce asylum fraud, reform how DHS handles family units and unaccompanied alien children who cross the border illegally, and restart construction of border barriers along the Southwest border, among other things.

We've posted actions on your Action Board urging your U.S. Representative to support this historic legislation. Please take action today and look for alerts early next week before the vote.
