Keeping our communities safe is a collective responsibility. That’s why we increased funding for first responders, invested in Community Violence Intervention programs, launched Operation Safe Neighborhoods to get illegal firearms off the street, and enacted commonsense gun safety laws. Together, we are tackling the root causes of violence and funding public safety efforts.
Community Violence Intervention (CVI)
Community Violence Intervention (CVI) Programs reduce violence, arrests, and incarceration while offering crucial support to those most at risk of encountering violence. These are evidence-based programs that use early intervention, counseling, and community support to reduce violence, arrests, and incarceration. By building relationships, mitigating conflict, and taking community-centered action, CVI initiatives address the root causes of violence.
In March, I signed a bipartisan bill investing $10 million in grants to support CVI initiatives across the state. The bill includes funding to establish the Michigan Office of Community Violence Intervention Services to get resources out the door and into our communities as efficiently and effectively as possible. I am proud of our bipartisan efforts this year to fund CVI.
Since I took office, we have invested over $1 billion in public safety efforts. We have also boosted local revenue sharing by 29%. These are resources sent directly to help local governments hire and train local first responders, among many other critical priorities. In this year’s budget recommendation, I proposed an additional $500 million for a wide range of public safety priorities. These investments would:

Bolster several public safety initiatives including Operation Safe Neighborhoods, which has taken over 350 illegal guns off the street before they could be used to commit a crime
Together, we can reduce gun violence in Michigan. Just a few weeks ago, I signed universal background checks for all gun purchases and safe storage requirements into law. These commonsense laws, supported by a majority of Michiganders, will help keep guns out of the hands of criminals and domestic abusers, and prevent children from accidentally getting their hands on a gun at home.
Together, we can build a safer, more just Michigan. Where every parent knows their kids will get home safe at the end of the day. A Michigan where we work together to make a real difference in each other’s lives.
