Let’s not forget that the challenges we are facing are largely the direct result of decades of inaction, the Trump’s Administration efforts to dismantle our immigration system, the implementation of short sighted policies that have worsened the bottleneck at the border, and the unprecedented conditions brought on by the pandemic and climate change. Republicans are not interested in solutions, but rather are focused on political stunts that amplify xenophobia, extremism and white nationalists talking points, all to agitate their base and to get a sound bite on Fox News.

Non-governmental organizations, lawyers, sponsors, faith communities, immigrant communities and volunteers are responding to the significant need at the border and in the interior with a welcoming spirit that is consistent with what we know about Americans: they support a compassionate approach to migration. Diaspora communities and other Americans are taking action through sponsorship and aid. This is what a welcoming nation looks like and it illustrates what is possible when Americans step up with a desire to be part of the solution and to help those in need.
