Management.

I’m a sophomore in college majoring in environmental science. Last summer, I
volunteered with American Conservation Experience. We worked 10-hour days
maintaining national parks and forests. It was hard work, but it was worth it.

So when I heard President Trump picked an anti-environmentalist to manage US
public lands, I was mad and decided to do something about it. Nominee William
Pendley is a known climate denier who has advocated for selling off all public
lands in the west. By signing this petition you can help stop him.

Sign the petition today: Demand that Congress remove William Pendley as acting
director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

America’s public lands are more than beautiful. They are rich bio-diverse eco-
systems, critical in fighting climate change. Healthy ecosystems, particularly
forests, are the ultimate mitigators of carbon emissions. We should not sell
these lands to private companies bent on drilling for oil or harvesting timber.
We should do everything we can to protect them.

But Trump’s pick for the director of the BLM has a record of doing the opposite.
Back in the 1980s Pendley pushed for selling all public land west of the
Mississippi. As an attorney he has represented fossil fuel interests many times.
And in 2017 he was paid a hefty sum to defend Trump’s decision to shrink Bears
Ears and Grand-Staircase National Monuments. Today he is still listed as a lead
attorney on one of those cases. Rather than protecting our natural resources, the director of public land
advocates for selling them off to the highest oil bidder. This is unacceptable.

Take Action Now: Demand that Congress remove William Pendley as acting director
of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

My generation knows we have the most to lose if we allow our public lands to
disappear. That’s why I’m excited to team up with the Chesapeake Climate Action
Network. CCAN is a climate justice organization in the DC area pushing hard to
make sure that our government works for us.

You can help us by adding your name to this petition.

I know I’m lucky. I’ve seen some of the most beautiful places in our country.
I’m proud that past presidents understood the importance of preserving these
public lands. They inspire people to want to support, conserve and sustain our
natural world. We can’t let this Administration take that away from us.

Thank you,

Hugh O'Connor for the Chesapeake Climate Action Network
