** We’re No.1!

Utah is THE best state in the nation, according to the U.S. News 2023 Best States ranking.
We’re No. 1 overall, plus No. 1 in the employment, fiscal stability and economic categories. Best state rankings started in 2017 and uses thousands of data points to determine what state is overall best at serving their residents.
Utah ranks first because we know how to get things done by working together – it’s the Utah way. Read Utah’s full report here ([link removed]) .
** One Utah Summit
------------------------------------------------------------
This year’s Spring One Utah Summit was a smashing success. We love celebrating our local economy, honoring some of the best and brightest of Utah, connecting with each other and dreaming big.
In my keynote address, I talked about our message to the young people of Utah: There has never been a better time to be alive and there has never been a better place to live than right now in Utah. Utah is not perfect, and there are challenges in our state – but we are not helpless. We can solve things – together. We’re proud of the Utah way – the idea that we can find ways to come together to get things done.
Utah is a special place because we care about the important things like family, taking care of each other, and giving back. As the leader in charitable giving and volunteerism each year, Utah is different and we want to keep it that way.
Thanks to all of the businesses, presenters and the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity for a great event!
** The year of the teacher
------------------------------------------------------------
Education has been a top priority for our administration, and with the Legislature’s help, we’ve delivered. This is the third year in a row that we have made historic investments in education. This week, we ceremonially signed some of the education bills that will make a huge difference to Utah families:
H.B. 477 Full Day Kindergarten:
Makes full-day kindergarten available for all local education agencies with an option for half-day kindergarten. We signed this bill in the Wasatch County School District today because it’s one of the first districts to implement districtwide full-day kindergarten in our state. As this program grows across our state, all families that feel that this option is best for their child, will have the opportunity to choose it.
H.B. 61 School Safety Requirements:
Ensures safe schools is a priority of every parent and educator. This bill creates a state security chief position within DPS and creates the School Security Task Force. We can keep our kids safe, and this bill allows us to come together as a state to do that.
H.B. 163 Protecting Student Religious and Moral Beliefs Regarding Athletic Uniform Requirements:
Provides that certain associations and educational organizations may not prohibit a student athlete from wearing religious clothing, or other clothing consistent with the student athlete's beliefs, while participating in an athletic activity. The bill requires these organizations to provide the clothing described above if the association or educational organization requires that the clothing be a certain material, style, or color.

** Connecting Utah: Central Utah

On Thursday, our Connecting Utah Tour took us to Juab, Sevier and Millard counties! We talked about:
➡️ how we can improve opportunities and jobs in rural Utah
➡️ why volunteerism matters and how students can be leaders
➡️ how there’s no better place to live than in Utah
We’re more than halfway through our Connecting Utah Tour and are so grateful for the opportunity we’ve had to connect with the various students and community members throughout Utah. It’s the best part about being governor. Stay tuned – we’ve got more stops next week!
** Let’s keep conserving, Utah

This week we joined the Division of Water Resources and the Jordan Valley Conservation Garden Park to talk about water conservation in Utah.
Our record snowpack is a welcome relief from drought – but we still need to rely on water conservation to stretch our precious water supply. All Utahns should fix leaks, irrigation systems and consider replacing nonfunctional grass. And we’re happy to announce that turf buybacks are statewide once again!

** Utah Law Enforcement Memorial Service
------------------------------------------------------------
Dozens of Utahns gathered on the west lawn of the Capitol on Thursday to honor the 147 peace officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Lt. Gov. Henderson joined police chiefs, sheriffs, and the family members of Utah’s fallen officers to pray, reflect, and remember Utah’s fallen. Thank you to the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial executive board for keeping the stories of these brave men and women close to our hearts.

Deidre Henderson hosted a panel to try and answer the age-old question with Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity executive director Ryan Starks, Zions Bank CEO Scott Anderson, Salt Lake Chamber President Derek Miller, and Utah Office of Energy Development director Greg Todd. All agreed that Utah succeeds because of our spirit of collaboration, fiscal prudence, reasonable regulation, commitment to rural Utah and a diversified economy.
