Dear Friend,
I am writing with the bittersweet news that Kevin Ring will be leaving FAMM at the end of June to take over as vice president of criminal justice advocacy at Arnold Ventures. It is incredibly hard to see Kevin go, but of course, we are excited to see what he will accomplish in his new role.
I hired Kevin nearly 15 years ago. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Kevin’s energy, vision and smarts have driven FAMM’s work and led to policy changes that have affected thousands of people in prison and those facing prison.
Since taking over as president in 2017, Kevin led FAMM to significant reform victories that safely reduced the country’s prison population, including the First Step Act, drug sentencing reforms in California, Tennessee, and Iowa, and the #KeepThemHome campaign, which enabled thousands of people released from federal prison due to COVID-19 to remain home with their families at the end of the nationwide lockdown.
I couldn’t have asked for a better successor, and am in awe of what Kevin has accomplished. But Kevin and I both know that FAMM’s work won’t be done when he leaves next month. We know that too many people are sent to prison for too long and, while incarcerated, are denied adequate medical care and rehabilitative programming.
FAMM’s Board of Directors is committed to finding a new leader who will continue FAMM’s vital work to reform our nation’s sentencing laws and prison policies. Our next president will inherit an incredibly talented and experienced staff that will make sure FAMM doesn’t miss a beat during the transition.
I am so proud of all that FAMM has accomplished, especially under Kevin’s leadership, and I am optimistic that many more victories are on the horizon.
My best,
Julie Stewart
