Pot, Parental Rights and Puberty Blockers — State Legislative Roundup

By: Jeff Johnston

Some Christians say, “I’m just not into politics,” or, “Politics are so divisive — I just stay away from it all.”

But the truth is, politics — legislation and public policies — affect each of us, along with our children and grandchildren.

Everyone feels the effects when federal and state legislatures tax income, property and purchases; spend money; legalize harmful substances; affirm or deny the sanctity of human life; infringe on parental rights; mandate what’s taught in schools; or interfere with religious freedom and free speech.

While some state legislative sessions have ended, many others are still meeting. Here’s a look at measures in different states across the country on issues affecting life, children, parents and families.

Some of these bills have become law, some have been defeated. But they exemplify why Christians can’t afford to say, “I just don’t get involved in politics.” It’s important that we all become educated about and engaged with these culture and policy issues.

In Defense of That ‘Old Time Religion’

By: Zachary Mettler

Perhaps you have heard this phrase before, “Christianity is not a religion, it’s a relationship.”

This statement is frequently made by very well-intentioned Christians who wish to emphasize the relational aspect of Christianity. They want to let people know that God is not mean, vindictive and spiteful; the God of Christianity is one of peace, justice and love.

The phrase is undoubtedly true in the fact that God loves all humankind, including every person in an individual and relational way.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him” (John 3:16-17 ESV).

But the sentiment goes too far when it asserts that Christianity is not a religion. There are deep problems implied with that idea.

First, it implies that Christianity does not have traditions, beliefs and practices to which orthodox Christians must subscribe. It suggests that Christianity can be subjectivized and privatized at the expense of historic teachings, mores and values.

It implies that since Christianity is only a relationship, faith is just, “Whatever it means to you and Jesus.”

As Writers Strike, Why Not Rerun Andy Griffith and Other Classic, Clean Shows of Another Era

By: Paul Batura

Over 11,500 film and television writers pushed themselves away from their keyboards last night triggering the first Hollywood strike in 15 years.

Reports indicate the first shows to shut down were late night programs — NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” CBS’s “The Late Show,” ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and Comedy Central’s “Daily Show.”

Those shows will be in reruns for the week, but the prospect of them not producing new trash disguised in the form of supposed humor strikes many of us as a win for the discerning public.

My friend and former Focus on the Family colleague Bob Waliszewski, who headed up our Plugged In department for several decades, seemed to echo this sentiment when he shared his first take on social media:

“The news reported that Hollywood’s writer strike would impact my ‘favorite shows.’ Nope! outside of local and national news and occasional sports, I have no favorite shows. None. Nada. Zero! Perhaps the answer here is becoming clearer!”

Our friends at the Babylon Bee struck a similar chord, featuring a story with the headline:

“Hollywood Movie Quality Expected To Improve Exponentially As Writers Go On Strike”

Writers are demanding higher pay and increased residuals from streaming programming.

Planned Parenthood’s Annual Report Shows Taxpayer Funding at Record High, Second Highest Number of Abortions Performed in Organization’s History

By: Nicole Hunt

Planned Parenthood released its annual report for 2021-2022, and it’s clear from the data — business is booming for the abortion seller.

According to the report, Planned Parenthood collected over $670 million in government funding, performed the second-highest number of abortions in the organization’s history, and provided fewer women’s health services.

Government funding for Planned Parenthood is up 5.8% from $633 million in last year’s report — an increase of more than $37 million in taxpayer funding to the organization. The rise in government funding was more than double the amount of growth from the previous year.

“While taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood is at a record high, many health services have declined.”

As reported by Christian Post, “prenatal services fell by 29% between 2021 and 2022. Additionally, miscarriage care fell by 5%, adoption referrals fell by 7%, STI tests fell by over 2% and pregnancy tests fell by 3.7%.”

Planned Parenthood made 2,667 adoption referrals in 2020, compared to 1,940 in 2021 and just 1,803 in 2022. Ironically, at the same time Planned Parenthood’s services to women considering adoptions fell considerably, the abortion giant has continued to oppose pregnancy resource centers that help women considering alternatives to abortion.

Abortion is Never Something to Applaud

By: Zachary Mettler

Last week, Nebraska fell one vote short of enacting a heartbeat bill that would protect preborn babies from abortion after their heartbeat can be detected, which generally occurs around six-weeks gestation. The Nebraska Heartbeat Act (LB 626) would have prevented 85% of abortions in Nebraska, saving 2,000 lives annually. On April 27, the Nebraska state Senate voted on LB 626; 33 votes were needed to overcome a filibuster and advance the bill to a final vote. The bill garnered 32 votes. According to the Nebraska Family Alliance (NFA), a Focus on the Family-allied state family policy council, the bill fell one-vote short due to state Senator Merv Riepe. NFA summarizes:

“Senator Merv Riepe, a Republican state senator from Ralston who campaigned as being 100% pro-life, changed his vote and caused the bill to fall one vote short of advancing. Senator Riepe opted to not cast a vote at all and was ‘present-not-voting.’ … We needed 33 votes to overcome the filibuster and advance the bill to final reading. Today’s vote was 32-15, with two senators ‘present-not-voting.’”

It’s tragic that LB 626 failed by just one vote. But last week’s vote was also revealing in another way. After the vote, state Senator Megan Hunt — who voted against LB 626 and has “Bi queen. She/her” in her Twitter bio — posted an eerie and discomfiting video on Twitter. The video is of dozens of pro-abortion activists — nearly all women — applauding, crying, cheering, whooping, and hugging in the Nebraska Capitol because of the bill’s failure.
