Dear Friends,

Our Victory In Partnership (VIP) Program convenes volunteer leaders who run food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Philadelphia. Based on the input of our VIP partners, we share tools, offer resources, facilitate trainings, and provide connections to additional funding and food for their programs.

As a part of our VIP Program, we recently began coordinating Pantry Tours, which are hosted by VIP members and are a wonderful opportunity for pantries to network and learn from one another. This week, Linda and Anthony from Northwest Mutual Aid Collective hosted our second Pantry Tour at their warehouse. VIP partners left with new connections, resources, and ideas to bring back to their programs. Some pantries even walked away with produce for their distribution day! We are very grateful to Linda and Anthony and NWMA for their continued work and support of the VIP program.

Policy & Advocacy

Looking Ahead To The Farm Bill: The Farm Bill is a large piece of legislation that authorizes most federal policies governing food and agriculture programs, including SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). The current Farm Bill expires on September 30, 2023, and as the first step in the reauthorization process, Congress has already begun holding hearings and listening sessions.

At the Coalition Against Hunger, we know that SNAP is a crucial support for millions of American families, and the cornerstone of our nation’s nutrition and food security safety net. See how we are asking Congress to protect and strengthen SNAP in the upcoming Farm Bill.

Public Health Emergency Ending: The Federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19 will expire on Thursday, May 11. The PHE allowed for many important flexibilities that have helped people stay connected to crucial resources since January of 2020.

SNAP Emergency Allotments- Share Your Story: If you are a current or former SNAP participant who has been impacted by the loss of the extra SNAP payments that people were getting to help with food costs during the pandemic, we want to hear from you. Hearing what people are experiencing will help make the case to state and federal legislators that SNAP benefits need to be increased.

Events In The Community

The City of Philadelphia is hosting a parent and youth resource fair to highlight citywide programs, initiatives, and services available to all Philadelphians, especially summer programming and employment opportunities for children, youth, and teens. Attendance is free, and all Philadelphia residents are encouraged to attend!

When: Saturday, May 6, from 11 am to 3pm

Where: PA Convention Center, G Hall.

SNAP Hotline In Action

Recently, we assisted a client on our hotline who was in need of help with her SNAP benefits. She was instructed by her County Assistance Office (CAO) to give us a call for help with a renewal. Our SNAP Hotline Counselor tried to submit a renewal for her, but it would not go through. In order to clear up any confusion, our Counselor set up a three way call between herself, our client and the customer service center for the CAO. We were encouraged to do a new application for the client, which we were able to submit. Thankfully, we were able to clear up the confusion, and ensure our client got her benefits!

 MAKE A STAND AGAINST HUNGER!

We strive to build a community where all people have the food they need to lead healthy lives. Hunger is preventable. Thank you for your continued support of our work!
