Big pharma is planning to rinse the NHS for £2.5 billion a year

Hi John,
Last week, we joined forces with health workers and NHS patients to protest at the annual gathering of UK pharma lobbyists – and demand big pharma drop their plans to rinse the NHS for another £2.5 billion a year.
The pharma industry wants to undermine a key pricing deal with the NHS, which currently stops the NHS drugs bill from rising by more than 2% each year. Negotiations on a new agreement are starting imminently and big pharma is pushing to lift the cap right off drug prices, at huge cost to the NHS.
With our health system on its knees and pharma companies already making record profits, we must stop this raid on our NHS.
We’ve joined doctors and nurses in saying that extra funds should go towards decent wages for NHS staff – and better care for patients – not exorbitant pay-outs for pharma CEOs.

As pharma bosses celebrated another year of lucrative profits behind closed doors, we heard from a series of brilliant speakers including a student doctor, health activists and an NHS GP.
They described how big pharma companies still send more money to their shareholders than they spend on researching new drugs and how these companies continue to ignore diseases that won’t make them huge profits, especially in the global south.
With big pharma riding high on pandemic profits and the industry now worth more than one trillion dollars, big pharma’s latest raid on the public purse is completely unjustifiable.
The public is already paying twice for medicines, first for key medical research at universities and then for the extortionate prices that pharma companies charge.
Can you join our call on the health secretary to refuse to cave in to big pharma?

Rejecting these scandalous demands is only the first step in taking on big pharma’s power. We’re also gearing up our campaign to place public control over the huge amounts of public-funded research which big pharma currently allowed to monopolise and exploit.
To build a more democratic medicines industry, with public control and more investment in the diseases pharma currently ignores, we need to build a movement for change.
We’re delighted to be working with NHS staff and patients and with your support, we can spread this campaign even wider.

Thank you for all your support.
