Executive orders. Lifetime judicial appointments. Deciding whether we go to war.
It’s no shock that the President of the United States has a lot of power, and their influence continues long after they leave office.
So how could we ever let someone gain such power without convincing a majority of Americans to support them?
That’s the unfortunate reality of our presidential elections today. Two of our last six presidents lost the popular vote – meaning that most Americans did NOT vote for them. Yet they were still sworn into office, and were still able to leave their lasting mark on American democracy.
It’s well past time for change. And right now, we’re closer than ever before to achieving it – with National Popular Vote.
NPV is an agreement among states to guarantee their electoral votes go to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. And we only need 75 more electors to make NPV a reality.
That’s because we’ve been hard at work for years, lobbying states and using our grassroots network to pass NPV. And it’s working – we already have 195 of the 270 electors we need for NPV to go into effect.
What’s more – we’re making exciting progress in Minnesota and Nevada as I write this! We have the momentum to make change right now. But I can’t do this without your support.
John, you’ve probably heard time and time again that our Electoral College system is broken. NPV is the solution to that.
As our elections are currently set up, presidential candidates will often ignore three out of four states during their campaigns – instead focusing all their efforts on the whiter than average battleground states that will decide the election. This, in turn, leads to much lower voter turnout in spectator states – which disproportionately harms voters of color.
But NPV would change that – making every state, and every voice matter in presidential elections.
John, this is how our elections always should have worked. There’s no better time than now to finally fix our broken Electoral College and address the inequities it's caused.
The reality is, passing NPV in the last states we need to succeed is going to require an immense amount of grassroots work. And our team is already spread so thin.
But this is something we’ve been working towards for years – and now we’re so close to a win. We won’t give up, but we really need your support to make the most of the momentum we have right now to pass NPV and make our elections better for everyone.
