As Congress approaches the deadline to raise the debt ceiling—at a moment when many Americans are still facing tough financial realities—you'd think the GOP could stop their nonsense and, for once, focus on relieving the undue burden that falls on individuals and families struggling to make ends meet.

Instead, the GOP House voted to pass Kevin McCarthy’s debt limit bill filled with harmful policies designed to roll back President Biden’s economic and climate progress and endanger the lives and livelihoods of millions of hard-working Americans.

The GOP is choosing to hold our economy hostage in favor of implementing cruel policies and cuts to life-saving programs, showing us once again why [it’s vital that we win back the House in 2024]([link removed]).

- Cut funding for veterans' health care services
- Limit life-saving food assistance through SNAP by extending the work requirement, which disproportionately harms Black families and people experiencing homelessness
- Cut federal funding for Meals on Wheels, removing more than one million seniors from the program
- Reduce access to Medicaid by implementing a work requirement for eligible recipients ages 19-55
- Block President Biden’s student debt relief program
- Repeal the Inflation Reduction Act’s incentives for investment in clean energy and creating manufacturing jobs in America, and roll back the law’s environmental protections
- Reduce eligibility for affordable housing vouchers, nutrition programs for infants and children, and Head Start programs, threatening access to housing, food, and education for hundreds of thousands of Americans

Because of the Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate—which this community’s efforts made possible—this bill won’t make it to President Biden’s desk.

But the dangers of a lasting GOP majority in the House are clear, as their insistence on playing politics with America’s debts—and throwing the most vulnerable under the bus to pay for tax breaks for their wealthy benefactors—pushes us closer to economic crisis.
