John,

Yesterday afternoon, a gunman entered a medical office building in Midtown Atlanta, killing one person and injuring several others. My heart goes out to the families of the victims and all others who are affected by this tragedy.

John, mass shootings are preventable. Our nation is under siege from gun violence, and we must have the courage to act.

I spoke with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer last night about the devastation in Midtown. If you’d like to watch our discussion, you can do so here. [[link removed]]

We discussed how the constant horrors of gun violence are a solvable problem through common-sense policy. Lawmakers at all levels of government have the power to implement reforms like universal background checks, assault weapons bans, and “red-flag” laws that would keep guns away from dangerous people.

But to do that, America must break away from this culture of gun violence and take a stand for public safety.

Like the victims in Midtown and so many other innocent Americans, my son Jordan was murdered by a man who had no business owning a gun, yet he felt empowered to pull the trigger with impunity in a senseless act of violence.

I can’t bring Jordan back, but I can fight so that no other mom has to go through the same pain that I did. The time is now for legislation at the federal level that can prevent these tragedies from happening again.

I’ve made this my key priority in Congress, and I don’t plan on stopping until these mass shootings are a thing of the past.

Thanks for supporting me in my efforts.

Onward,

Lucy McBath
