First Star Celebrates National Foster Care Month 🌟

May is foster care awareness month! To raise awareness about foster care, First Star will share on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn some of the educational hurdles faced by young adults in the system, and some organizations making change. On May 17th and 18th, First Star’s 48-hour giving campaign aims to raise $5,000 to support First Star’s mission to improve education for youth in foster care. Join us!

Donations received at any time during the month of May will count toward the $5,000 goal.

Scholar Advisory Committee Podcast Series

The Scholars Advisory Council is hosting the Scholars Voice Podcast Series, a community space dedicated to scholar voice and developing solutions. In collaboration with participating Alumni, scholars from across our Academies will develop talking points around the societal challenges introduced during the 2022 I Dream A World campaign.

Podcast Distribution:
There will be a series of three podcasts posted every Wednesday in May. All Podcasts will be uploaded to the First Star YouTube page. The first episode releases on Wednesday, May 10th!

First Star Alumni Awards Show

The First Star Alumni Awards Show is a community celebration for the First Star Class of 2023 & Alumni who've made outstanding achievements. We are hosting our second annual Alumni Awards Show on Saturday, June 10th at 10:30 am (PST). First Star Alumna Board Member

Adalyce Hollis is an active Alumni member from the First Star Loyola Chicago Academy. She currently attends Illinois State University earning her degree in nutrition and dietetics and is a leader in the First Star Scholar Advisory Committee. As a Board Member, she hopes to be an advocate for foster youth and to bridge the community by debunking common misconceptions and assumptions about one's foster care experience while validating everyone's unique foster care experience. She hopes to increase the resources available for higher education and alternative pathways for current and former foster youth.

For the 5th consecutive year, First Star has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator and a 2023 Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid (previously GuideStar).
