Friend, happy Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month!

Each week of May, we’re highlighting an inspiring AAPI woman in politics who has made an impact on the fight for lasting progressive change.

Today, we’re celebrating Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawai’i!

Mazie Hirono won her election to the Senate in 2012, after representing Hawai’i for three terms in the House of Representatives.

Upon her victory, Hirono became the first female Senator to represent Hawai’i, as well as the first Asian-born immigrant to ever serve in the Senate.

In the Senate, Hirono has advanced countless progressive causes, including Medicare for All and Universal Pre-K, and is a strong advocate for the voices and concerns of Native Hawai’ians.

Prior to her work in Congress, Hirono served as Hawai’i's Lieutenant Governor for two terms. Hirono championed legislation to expand early childhood education and strengthen worker’s compensation laws in Hawai’i. 

Friend, remember: Progressive leaders like Mazie Hirono were elected thanks to the tireless activism and organizing by grassroots supporters like you!
