After Hastings Series, Ethics Standard Restored
Hospital Accreditation Organization Responds to Concerns About Ethics Services

The organization that accredits hospitals reversed its decision to eliminate the standard for clinical ethics services after a series of essays in Hastings Bioethics Forum raised concerns and stimulated a national conversation. The Joint Commission recently announced it is restoring the standard (Joint Commission Perspectives, May 2023), responding to pushback from ethicists on the need to resolve ethics and values questions in patient care.

In the three-part series in the Forum, members of the Empire State Bioethics Consortium explain what’s at stake:

“Removal of the clinical ethics element both impedes achieving the objective of equity and undercuts progress toward fostering clinical and organizational ethical practice within health care institutions.” Read “Where Is Clinical Ethics in the Revised Hospital Accreditation Standard?”

Eliminating a quality metric for clinical ethics “is at odds with good clinical practice and it reinforces structural inequality.” Read “Health Equity Without Ethics Perpetuates Marginalization.”

The commission “should restore and strengthen the clinical ethics standard.” Read “Confusing Equity for Ethics Standards: Where Do We Go from Here?”
