These are the heartbreaking words of Abdurrahman Can, the leader of a small village in Başpınar, Adıyaman, Türkiye. He and his family are one of the 1.5 million people in Türkiye that have been affected by the earthquakes on February 6. Since that day, the invisible damage caused by this disaster has become just as apparent as the physical damage.
We have scaled up our psychosocial support activities for survivors in response to overwhelming mental health needs in Türkiye and Syria following the earthquakes. A partner organization supported by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is providing group psychosocial support sessions to people in Başpınar and throughout the region. So far, over 7,500 of these sessions have been conducted in Türkiye since the earthquakes first struck.
Our teams on the ground hear stories like Abdurrahman’s every day in Türkiye. As we have begun to shift our operations toward long-term recovery, we have witnessed a high need for mental health support in earthquake-affected areas of Türkiye. Many people are depressed, anxious, and uncertain about the future. Some relive the experiences in their minds and believe that another disaster could happen again.
But with your support, MSF has already begun the healing process for thousands of survivors:
“Everyone is stressed, but we are trying to recover. We are here as a family, trying to hold on to life. Now, at least we know that someone is listening to us.” - Abdurrahman
