This morning, Ayanna and Rep. Grace Napolitano called on the National
Institute for Mental Health to study post-traumatic prison disorder:

We know that incarceration is inherently damaging to mental health.

Research into post-traumatic prison disorder is a critical step that would
help inform responsive policies that support formerly incarcerated people
as they reconnect with their families and communities. To help people who
live with the disorder, we have to understand it better.

We need a paradigm shift — away from the current mindset of relentless
punishment and incarceration and towards a system based on restorative
