It’s David Wheeler from American Muckrakers PAC - I am writing to tell you about an exciting new development in my life.

After two long and hard fought years serving as President of American Muckrakers PAC I am taking a step back from the day to day management while I focus on my run for North Carolina Insurance Commissioner.

Graeme McGufficke, an experienced political operative with a keen sense for strategic political thinking, will now serve as our Executive Director. I am excited he agreed to lead the PAC at this decisive moment.

With all of this in mind, it is worth reflecting on all we accomplished and all the hell we raised together over the last two years here.

In 2021 I co-founded the PAC, along with Col. Moe Davis, as our way of fighting back against the rising tide of authoritarianism, hate, and violence, we were witnessing on the political right across the country and in my backyard in North Carolina.

The initial objective of the PAC was unseating and exposing North Carolina’s January 6th extremist — and now former Congressman — Madison Cawthorn, who had been sworn into office earlier that year and was riding high in the polls. Armed with a Twitter account and a band of citizen investigators that included lawyers, accountants, teachers, blue collar workers, and even a librarian, we set out to wreak havoc on his campaign with facts.

We began to create a buzz after exposing multiple incidents of Cawthorn bringing weapons into the worst possible places imaginable, including a loaded gun in his carry-on bag at both Asheville and Charlotte airports, and bringing a dagger onto school grounds numerous times. Our hard work prompted a new firearms policy for the Asheville airport.

By exposing Cawthorn with new facts, we put ourselves on the map as the group most dedicated to unseating Cawthorn and began receiving more and more tips about him to the point where we became the clearinghouse for releasing new fact based information on him.

The Cawthorn saga culminated with our coup de grâce - our release of a video of Cawthorn pinning down another person and aggressively humping his face.

Released days before his Republican primary the video caught fire across the internet and media and is widely seen as having played a role in his defeat. While we don’t take all the credit for Cawthorn’s loss, we were proud to have been part of the broad coalition of North Carolinians who worked to unseat him.

From there we set our sights on Lauren Boebert and from Summer to Fall 2022 we released a torrent of independently verified and fact based exposés on her finances and behavior in and outside of office that went viral on the internet and in the media.

A sampling of some of the facts we brought to bear on Cawthorn and Boebert.

Responding to our allegations Boebert did a conservative media tour going to shows like Fox’s Sean Hannity Show calling us liars and threatening me, the PAC and our donors, with a lawsuit.
She never filed anything. However we are filing a suit of our own against Boebert for defamation, the aim of which is twofold:

1. Prove she defamed you, me, and the PAC.
2. Hold her accountable for her finances, January 6th activity, and defamation.

This lawsuit currently stands as one of the most tangible ways we have to take down Boebert before the 2024 election.

It won’t be cheap but our team is ramping up for a long and drawn out legal battle. A donation of as little as $5 can have a huge impact for us as we prepare to take on Boebert and the GOP’s immense legal apparatus.
