Hi,

Every week, we learn more about the staggering levels of corruption from right-wing Supreme Court justices.

The latest bombshell report? Jane Roberts, a legal recruiter and the wife of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, received over $10 million in commissions for placing lawyers at top law firms, some of which had business in front of the Supreme Court.1

That means that Jane and John Roberts were receiving large sums of money from law firms arguing cases that John Roberts was ruling on.

This is corruption, plain and simple. Coming alongside other shocking scandals from Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch, it’s clear that Congress must pass a Supreme Court code of ethics NOW.

We first learned about Jane Roberts’ legal recruiting in December via a complaint from her former co-worker, Kendall Price. "When I found out that the spouse of the chief justice was soliciting business from law firms, I knew immediately that it was wrong," he said. "They were being asked by the spouse of the chief justice for business worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and there was no one to complain to. Most of these firms were likely appearing or seeking to appear before the Supreme Court.”1

A recent report from Insider confirmed Price’s claims. Documents demonstrated that Roberts received a staggering $10.3 million between 2007-2014 alone, and that at least one of her clients argued a case before the Supreme Court after paying her hundreds of thousands of dollars.2

Chief Justice Roberts has failed to disclose any of these financial dealings. He incorrectly declared his wife’s earnings as a “salary,” when she was unambiguously receiving commissions. He has failed to recuse himself from a single case involving law firms connected with his spouse, and has refused to answer any of the Senate's questions about these conflicts of interest.2

Public trust in the Supreme Court is at an all time low. On top of Roberts’ obvious conflicts of interests, recent investigations have also uncovered repeated cases of corruption involving right-wing Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch. Members of Congress, the heads of Federal agencies, and nearly every other top official in our national government is bound by a code of ethics - why should our highest court operate without basic ethical standards? It’s time for Congress to pass the Supreme Court Ethics Act.
