Common Birds Are Affected by Climate Change
For many birders, the sweet, clear song of the White-throated Sparrow is a cherished sign of spring. While White-throated Sparrows ([link removed]) may be one of North America's most common and abundant sparrow species today, how will they fare as the places they need start to disappear?
Audubon’s 2019 Climate Report: Survival by Degrees ([link removed]) revealed that sparrows, including the White-throated Sparrow, may decline 87 percent over the next 50 years. White-throated Sparrow populations remain somewhat stable for now, but converting their preferred forest habitat to agriculture is, by far, the greatest threat.
The facts are clear. The same climate-related threats that put birds at risk will impact people and other wildlife. With our Climate Visualizer, you can see how increasing temperatures and habitat loss will affect birds like the White-throated Sparrow in the near future.
