Groundwork Project

Folks, what’s going on in Mississippi is nothing short of a hostile takeover.  ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌  ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌  ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌

Folks, what’s going on in Mississippi is nothing short of a hostile takeover.

The overwhelmingly white, Republican state legislature and Republican Gov. Tate Reeves have passed legislation that creates an unelected, state-appointed court system along with expanding the police presence throughout Jackson.

If you agree that this is an overreach of power, consider pitching in to Groundwork Project today. I’ll explain more below, but we’re on the frontlines in states like Mississippi working to overcome the antidemocratic attacks coming from Republican lawmakers.

If you didn’t know, Jackson has the highest Black population of any city in America, and now, two white Republicans will have sole jurisdiction over the city’s judicial appointments — leaving the majority-Black residents of Jackson voiceless.

No public say. No elections. Just Jim Crow-era politics in the present day.

Thankfully, the NAACP has already filed a lawsuit against this unconstitutional power grab, but if we’re being honest, this isn’t the first or last time Republicans in “red states” will try to undermine our fair and free democracy.

The biggest political battles of our generation are coming from states like Mississippi — just look at last year, when the Supreme Court case that led to the overturning of Roe v. Wade emerged from Mississippi.

And yet, these same states are the ones being overlooked and under-resourced by the greater progressive movement.

That’s where Groundwork Project comes in.

We’re supporting hyper-local organizations throughout Mississippi, the Deep South, the Plains, and Appalachia so that we can help build grassroots power in places like Jackson, and other communities that have faced generations of disenfranchisement.

We also don’t wait until election season to start working. Our grantees are putting in the time right now to help mobilize folks across our target regions and fight back against the wrongdoings of power-hungry Republicans.

And these efforts are making a difference. In the Mississippi governor’s race, polling shows that Democrats are well within reach of ousting Gov. Tate Reeves and flipping the state blue:

A headline from The Hill reading 'Democrats see Mississippi governor's race as ripe for upset

The only thing stopping us from moving forward is whether we have the resources to continue. Which is why I’m asking:

Folks, can you chip in $10 today to help Groundwork Project continue investing in hyper-local organizing in states like Mississippi?

Thank you so much for your support. Working together is the only way we will overcome unconstitutional power grabs, Republican supermajorities, and whatever else they try to throw our way.
