Hi Reader,
Today, we published the latest in our investigative series about Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas: Billionaire Harlan Crow paid the private school tuition of a Thomas family member who the justice raised “as a son.” Thomas did not disclose the payments.
Last month, we reported that Thomas accepted luxury travel from Crow virtually every year for decades. Crow also paid money to Thomas and his relatives in an undisclosed real estate deal: The billionaire purchased the house where Thomas’ mother lives, then poured tens of thousands of dollars into improving the property. And roughly 15 years ago, Crow made a significant donation to a political group founded by Thomas’ wife, which paid her a $120,000 salary.
ProPublica has the freedom and resources to pursue investigations into people at the highest levels of power in our government because we’re a nonprofit, independent newsroom. Our funding doesn’t come from ad sales or one wealthy owner. Instead, we are supported by philanthropic donations from individuals, foundations and more. In the last year, more than 40,000 individuals have made donations to ProPublica of $25, $100 or even $5,000 to ensure that we can continue to produce the kind of well-researched journalism that rights wrongs and spurs impact.
Join us today, and help us continue the work we’ve begun to investigate the courts. Any amount makes you a ProPublican, and it only takes a few minutes to make a gift. When you’re done, you’ll feel good knowing that you’re making a difference in ProPublica’s ability to hold the powerful accountable, no matter how long it takes.
Thanks so much,
Jill Shepherd
