My team’s task: Advocate for three climate bills (SB 253, SB 233, and SB 12) and a stronger climate budget. We only had a brief window of opportunity to make our case with each office, so we needed to be strategic and efficient while also being compelling.
As I looked around in the hallways of the building I could see people from all walks of life — folks from community groups wearing their organization’s T-shirts and holding clipboards, photographers documenting a lobbying meeting in the middle of the atrium, Senators and Assemblymembers walking around with briefcases surrounded by legislative staff.
But it was also unnerving to me to know that some of the folks I saw were lobbyists for oil companies, who had enough resources to make every day lobby day. It struck me that climate justice advocates being in these same spaces is not just a good thing; it’s absolutely necessary to fight back against these constant forces.
See what it’s like inside the Legislature and learn more about the bills that we were advocating for >>
Friend, if you ever have a chance to join a lobby day or talk directly to representatives, I highly encourage you to go for it. Even if you have no lobbying experience at all like me.
Seeing just a glimpse of how the government works on the inside was enlightening. I hope you have a chance to make your voice heard on issues important to you soon!
Thanks for watching.
