Friend,
It’s been just over a year since the draft of the Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe was released.
It was a day that sent much of our country into a panic over the understandable fear that our daughters and granddaughters would grow up in a world with fewer rights than we had.
But here in Michigan, we didn’t stop at panic. We activated a concrete plan, designed with the possible reversal of Roe in mind, and put it into action.
Even before we knew the overturn of Roe was a possibility, leaders and activists in Michigan began putting together a ballot initiative that would codify the Roe standard into our constitution. We were ready to go when the decision was leaked. Just two months later, thousands of organizers and volunteers collected over 750,000 Michiganders had signed the petition required to get the initiative on our November ballots. In a state with a population of 10 million.
The hard work didn’t stop there: during the following months we effectively got out a huge voter education campaign so that Michiganders knew it was on their ballots and wouldn’t be fooled by misinformation from its opponents. We know a ton of young people especially registered to vote because of the ballot initiative. And it passed resoundingly in November, with 56% of the vote.
This story is an example of how Michigan is creating the blueprint on how to respond to these types of issues — and it all comes back to thinking ahead, and having a concrete plan. Because we were prepared, we were ready to go right after the decision was leaked, and now our state constitution will be amended to protect reproductive rights for women in Michigan.
That forethought and planning are things I’ve tried to bring to each of my Congressional campaigns, and one I’m certainly applying to this campaign for U.S. Senate. Because having good intentions is nice — but having a plan for action is way, way more impactful for our daughters and granddaughters.
If you’d like to help me out with some of that important planning and help Michigan to continue to lead on these issues, please chip in below.
