Friends, it will not surprise you to hear how I feel about the latest from House Republicans - namely, a bill that essentially attempts to extort wildly unfair (and unpopular!) concessions that weaken our social safety net in exchange for allowing the federal government to pay its bills. A few things their extreme bill includes:
Beyond gutting key elements of our social safety net, the GOP bill also makes a truly ill-advised choice to put big oil over our planet, rolling back the cost-saving energy credits in the Inflation Reduction Act while simultaneously cutting the thousands of green jobs it created. In short, it’s a huge no from me. Raising the alarm about legislation that does far more harm than good is important. But it’s also true that without action, complaining about Republicans enacting the policies they’ve told us they want to enact does nobody any good. We need to channel our anger and frustration into making sure they lose their majority in the next election. I’m all in for 2024 - I’m ready to win my own election and help make sure as many Democrats as possible all around the country do the same. But none of us can do it without your help.
