In this newsletter: In one of his biggest decisions so far as Pittsburgh mayor, Ed Gainey taps Larry Scirotto as Pittsburgh's next police chief. ([link removed]) His recent stint as a chief in Florida had a messy ending.

And after a decline throughout much of the past decade, data shows the number of young people using county homelessness services increased by 27% from 2020 through 2022 ([link removed]) , which may be a reflection of these services lifting their COVID-19 restrictions.

Larry Scirotto's appointment as Pittsburgh's new police chief capped a search that lasted almost a year and still requires City Council’s approval. Scirotto spent 23 years in Pittsburgh’s police bureau.

“His deep ties in the city and his deep ties in the bureau, and his outside perspective, make him the right choice,” Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey said at a press conference Wednesday.

Scirotto, 49, will take over the bureau at a time when internal pressures and staffing issues, along with the desire for reform that swept Gainey into office two years ago, will make the chief’s job a challenging one.
