The Best Responses to the State of the Union
=====================================
Last night, President Donald Trump gave his third State of the Union (SOTU) address. Trump addressed a wide range of topics, but his lie-laden speech was anythng but representative of the true state of our union. To help sort out fact from fiction, here are CAP's 6 favorite responses to Trump's claims in his address to the nation.
"We are advancing with unbridled optimism and lifting high our citizens of every race, color, religion, and creed." -President Donald Trump
Maggie Siddiqi, Director of CAP's Faith Initiative
Tweet: Trump said he's "uplifting individuals of every race, color, and religion"? Tell that to your Muslim ban. #SOTU <[link removed]>

"Working with Senate Majority Leader McConnell and his colleagues in the Senate, we have confirmed a record number of 187 new Federal judges to uphold our Constitution as written. -President Donald Trump
Vanita Gupta, President & CEO of The Leadership Conference
Tweet: Trump is delivering his State of the Union address during #BlackHistoryMonth and brags about his federal judges. KNOW THIS: Trump hasn't named a single African-American circuit court nominee. In 3+ years. It's a deeply disturbing setback for judicial diversity in America. <[link removed]>

"I am thrilled to report to you tonight that our economy is the best it has ever been. " -President Donald Trump
Alexandra Cawthorne Gaines, VP of CAP's Poverty to Prosperity Program
Tweet: In tonight's #SOTU, Trump is going to paint a rosy picture of his 'greatest economy ever.' But for people who aren't millionaires, that's not even close to reality. I know because we asked them. THREAD: <[link removed]>

"And we will always protect your Medicare and your Social Security." -President Donald Trump
Rebecca Cokely, Director of CAP's Disability Justice Initiative
Tweet: Trump's LATEST attack on Social Security happened LAST WEEK. A notice of rulemaking to cut hundreds of thousands off the roles by overly bureaucratizing the continuing disability review process. #CripTheVote #SOTU <[link removed]>

"I have also made an ironclad pledge to American family: We will always protect patients with preexisting conditions." -President Donald Trump
Emily Gee, CAP's Health Economist
Tweet: That's false. Trump is actively undermining pre-ex protections by supporting a lawsuit to overturn the ACA. He's also made it easier for insurance companies to sell plans that aren't subject to ACA protections and do discriminate based on medical history. <[link removed]>

Outrage at Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) ripping up Trump's speech at the conclusion of State of the Union address.
Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX):
Tweet: Folks are more outraged with @SpeakerPelosi ripping up the speech in half than with the fact that Trump has ripped families apart at the border. #SOTU2020 He's ripped babies from their parents' arms and put them in cages. That should outrage EVERYONE! <[link removed]>
