Daily Docket — Wednesday, May 3

Here are some updates from the last few days.

• Today, voting advocates and GOP lawmakers in Moore v. Harper offered to submit additional briefing to the U.S. Supreme Court about whether the Court has jurisdiction over the case after the North Carolina Supreme Court reversed its prior ruling on partisan gerrymandering.

• A Montana judge rejected Rep. Zooey Zephyr’s (D) request to block her censure by the Republican-led state House, ruling that the court does not have authority over this issue.

• Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) signed a law tightening the state’s existing ban on private funding for election administration. Private grants to elections offices have become a target of Republican lawmakers since 2020.

• Similarly, on Monday, Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) signed a ban on private funding for election administration into law.

• Also on Monday, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) signed a law extending the deadline for military and overseas voters to return their mail-in ballots, codifying part of last year’s pro-voting constitutional amendment.

Here’s what to expect coming up.

• Last week, the Florida Legislature passed a bill to limit mail-in voting, allow Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) to run for president without resigning his current office and more. The bill is waiting for DeSantis’ signature.
