John,
The Republican primary for president is underway, and both of the leading candidates are fascists open about wanting to crush worker rights, end fair elections, slash environmental protections, take away reproductive freedom, and give even more power to billionaires and multinational corporations. Stopping whoever wins between Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis is a top priority because if either of them becomes president, we may never have another fair election or the opportunity to peacefully make progress. That's why we're reaching out to ask: who do you think is more dangerous for America, Donald Trump or Ron DeSantis?
Donald Trump was by far the most dangerous president in modern history — posing as a populist while pursuing policies that impoverish workers, take away our freedoms, slash safety protections, lower life expectancy for working families, destroy our environment, and undermine our democracy. That’s why we’ve worked so hard to demand he’s banned from future elections for violating the Constitution by leading a violent insurrection. However, Ron DeSantis is also an existential threat to democracy. In Florida, he's pursued authoritarian policies like banning books, weaponizing hatred against immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community, criminalizing protests, and signing one of the cruelest abortion bans in America. His background before becoming governor is just as concerning. DeSantis served as a lawyer at Guantanamo Bay, and was tasked with protecting the human rights of those detained. Not only has DeSantis repeatedly defended human rights abuses at Guantanamo, but he's also been credibly accused of listening to prisoner complaints and instructing guards to make conditions that bothered them even worse. That kind of cruel indifference to human suffering and the rule of law is an incredibly dangerous quality to have in a president. As a member-driven progressive movement, we need to hear from you about how we should prepare for the threat of a Trump or a DeSantis presidency.
