Send More Asylum Officers, Not Troops, to the Border
WASHINGTON D.C. — With the Biden administration planning to send 1,500 troops to the border as part of its response to migration challenges, the following is a quote from Jennie Murray, President and CEO of the National Immigration Forum:
"We need Republicans and Democrats to work together on solutions for the challenges at the border and for immigration more broadly. Sending troops to the border is not the answer. We’ve seen this before, and it has been ineffective and impractical. It also sends the message that migrants are a threat, when the vast majority are seeking safety.
"The president and Congress should send additional asylum officers and immigration judges to the border, not troops. Our values guide us to prioritize migrants’ human dignity together with our security. That’s also what Americans want."
Last week the Alliance for a New Immigration Consensus, a coalition of nearly 40 faith, business, agriculture, education, national security and advocacy organizations, also weighed in on the need for border solutions.
