Misinformation and disinformation have become a disturbing reality in our political discourse. But as we all know, lies in politics are nothing new.
In 2002 , it was false claims and the demonization of people who opposed the war that paved the way for the bush administration’s disastrous invasion of Iraq.
In 2008 , supercharged by the rise of social media, there were birther conspiracies claiming that our first black president was illegitimate.
In 2020 , it was the Big Lie, claiming that Donald Trump won the election, which continues to threaten the core of democracy.
Today , Iranian Americans are being subjected to disinformation and wild conspiracies vilifying anyone who has worked to prevent war, stood up against broad sanctions, or simply has a political viewpoint that others disagree with.
That is why we launched NIACTruth.org -- to get out the facts and stop bad actors from taking advantage of our community to satisfy their own agendas. We don't need to agree on everything, but we as a community must be able to have debates based on actual facts.
