Dear Friend,

Happy Small Business Week! This week, I want to recognize our small businesses that keep Michigan?s economy thriving. I know that every small business is an act of hope. When you open a storefront in your hometown, send that first email to friends and family announcing your new consulting business, or share your dream with the world?you?re betting on yourself and our state

I am proud of the investments we?ve made in our small businesses [ [link removed] ] that will help grow our economy, create good-paying jobs, and re-energize Michigan towns. To those entrepreneurial, hardworking, small business owners, I want you to know that the state has your back.

Sincerely,?

Governor Whitmer

Small Business Week

This week is Small Business Week [ [link removed] ]. Our Michigan small businesses pioneer innovative solutions to our state?s greatest challenges and create opportunities for families and workers, all while growing our economy. Small businesses are the heartbeat of our communities, employing more than half of our nation?s workers, launching new technologies, and keeping supply chains on Main Street. By committing to support small businesses, we will build a stronger Michigan where everyone can succeed ? from the bottom up and the middle out.

Investing in Small Businesses

We are betting on small businesses in Michigan. Last month, I announced the Match on Main [ [link removed] ] program alongside the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). Match on Main has awarded grants to twenty-eight communities across Michigan?to create jobs, generate further investment, support local business, and strengthen our downtowns.

Earlier this year, I signed a bipartisan supplemental budget [ [link removed] ] that will revitalize our communities, empower entrepreneurs, and support workers. In 2021, we launched the MI New Economy [ [link removed] ] to grow Michigan?s middle class, support small businesses and invest in our communities. We are making Michigan the place to be by creating opportunity that lasts for decades.?

During this year?s State of the State, I announced Make it in Michigan [ [link removed] ], which sustainably funds our economic development efforts while growing our talent pool, making our communities better places to live, and helping our state become a place where anyone can thrive. If we get this done in the upcoming state budget, we can create opportunity for you and your family and support local economies and small businesses across our state. Businesses know that we must compete to grow, and when we do, we all win.

Let?s keep our foot on the accelerator as we grow our economy, support good-paying jobs, and build thriving towns across Michigan.

Shop Local!

Small businesses are the foundation of our economy. During Small Business Week, I encourage Michiganders to support local small businesses [ [link removed] ]and recognize entrepreneurs for their innovation, grit, and faith in Michigan. Our vibrant downtown communities are filled with local shops that specialize in many unique areas. From craft drinks to independent bookstores to our Michigan coffee shops, there are plenty of charming small businesses for all your needs. With the weather warming up, there are many local events to attend while supporting Michigan workers at small businesses. With them, we?ll continue moving our state to a bright future.

Michigan Workforce Development Board

We must continue to create policies that support the growing resiliency in workplaces and improve the workforce in Michigan. That?s why I created the Michigan Workforce Development Board [ [link removed] ]. The board assists in the development, implementation, and modification of Michigan's four-year state plan according to the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. I am committed to help young people get jobs to ?make stuff and grow stuff,? by closing in on our 60 by 30 [ [link removed] ] goal to help 60% of our workforce achieve a post-secondary degree or certification by 2030. Together we can, and we will.
