John,
This week, I led a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing to discuss adopting a code of ethics and begin restoring integrity to the highest court in the land: the Supreme Court of the United States of America.
Recent reports have made this issue more timely, but it certainly isn’t new. I first called on the Chief Justice to create a code of conduct for the Court eleven years ago. It has yet to happen. And in the meantime, public confidence in the Court and our judiciary continues to plummet.
Our Committee has made record progress confirming President Biden’s judicial nominees. Once confirmed, each of these judges is bound by the high bar of ethical behavior that every federal judge in the country must follow. There is no reason Supreme Court Justices should be exempt.
In order to restore the public’s faith in the Supreme Court, there must be a clear code of ethics that holds a Justice accountable for their actions if they engage in conduct that crosses the line.
My best,
Dick Durbin
