Dear John,

I’m feeling all kinds of fired up and ready to fight. Last week, House Republicans passed the Default on America Act, which would take Medicaid away from people who do not meet arbitrary and inequitable work requirements.

This is Speaker McCarthy’s idea of addressing the debt ceiling crisis – lowering taxes for the wealthy and punishing low-income earners. We’re optimistic the Senate will stop this bill in its tracks – an overwhelming majority of voters oppose any cuts to Medicaid – but the only way we can be certain is if your Senator hears from you now.

John, can you take a moment to send a letter to your Senator about why you oppose work requirements? [[link removed]]

As this legislation moves forward to the Senate and makes waves in the media, we need to shut this awful narrative down together. We know that work requirements – put simply – do not work and Medicaid shouldn’t come with strings attached.

Under this bill, every single Medicaid user – wherever they are, whoever they may be – has to either prove they’re working or apply for an exemption. Work requirements are ableist and could lead to millions of people losing their access to care. In fact, it’ll take care away from sick and disabled people, and would hurt older adults 50-65 for whom there are already few job opportunities. We can’t let that happen.

54 million people in the U.S. depend on Medicaid – including older adults and disabled people who rely on it to receive care in their own homes and communities. We need Congress to act in our best interest – instead of cutting Medicaid and taking health care away from people, Congress should make the wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share.

Tomorrow, the Senate will hold a hearing on the budget and Default on America Act, and we need to make sure they know hundreds of thousands of voters oppose any cuts to Medicaid. That’s why our Senators need to hear from you now.

Take action now and tell your Senators to protect Medicaid. [[link removed]]

Together, we’re fighting for a better care system for all of us. Thank you for your efforts in that fight.
