"Recidivism of Females Released from State Prison, 2012?2017 [ [link removed] ]"

Based on a BJS recidivism study on persons released from state prison across 34 states, this report compares females and males by their commitment offenses and recidivism patterns. During the 5 years after their release in 2012, more than half of females (55%, compared to 66% of males) who were serving time for a violent offense were arrested for another offense, while more than a third (38%, compared to 49% of males) had a new conviction for any offense, and about a fourth (27%, compared to 43% of males) were returned to prison.

"Work Assignments Reported by Prisoners, 2016 [ [link removed] ]"

This statistical brief provides findings on whether federal and state prisoners were required to have a work assignment, the types of work they performed while incarcerated, and reasons they chose to have a work assignment if one was not required. Findings are based on data collected in the most recent Survey of Prison Inmates, which was conducted in 2016 through face-to-face interviews with a national sample of federal and state prisoners.

"Arrest History of Persons Admitted to State Prison in 2009 and 2014 [ [link removed] ]"

Among persons admitted to state prison in 2014 across 34 states, 77% had five or more prior arrests in their criminal history, including the arrest that resulted in their prison sentence. A similar proportion (76%) of persons admitted to state prison in 29 states in 2009 had five or more prior arrests.

The 369,200 persons admitted to state prison in 34 states in 2014 had an estimated 4.2 million prior arrests in their criminal histories, including the arrest that resulted in their prison sentence. In both 2009 and 2014, persons admitted to state prison had a median of nine prior arrests in their criminal histories. About 1 in 10 persons admitted in 2014 at age 24 or younger had at least one prior arrest outside of the state where they were admitted, and about 1 in 4 persons admitted at age 40 or older had at least one such arrest.

"Opioid Use Disorder Screening and Treatment in Local Jails, 2019 [ [link removed] ]"

This study shows that at midyear 2019, more than 6 in 10 (63%) local jail jurisdictions reported that they conducted opioid use disorder (OUD) screenings of persons at intake. Fewer than 2 in 10 (19%) jurisdictions said that they initiated medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for those identified as having OUD.

After intake, nearly a quarter (24%) of jail jurisdictions continued MAT for OUD for persons admitted with a current prescription or for those who were getting services from a methadone clinic prior to admission. More than half (54%) of jail jurisdictions provided confined persons medications?such as clonidine, lofexidine, methadone or buprenorphine (e.g., Suboxone)?to treat opioid withdrawal. Upon the release of individuals from jail facilities, about 28% of local jail jurisdictions linked persons with OUD to MAT in the community. A quarter (25%) of jail jurisdictions provided overdose reversal medications to persons with OUD upon release.

BJS seeks applications for funding to administer the Law Enforcement Core Statistics (LECS) Program. The LECS will focus on the organizational characteristics of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) to provide accurate and timely national statistics about the personnel, operations, policies, and procedures of federal, state, county, local, and tribal LEAs in the United States. The LECS Program includes BJS?s two core law enforcement collections: the Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) survey and the Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies (CSLLEA).

On May 18, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. ET, BJS will hold a webinar that will provide an overview of the LECS Program solicitation and answer questions from interested applicants. Preregistration is required for all participants. 2016?2020 datasets now available from the Federal Law Enforcement Agency Deaths in Custody Reporting Program

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has released eight datasets from the 2016?2020 Federal Law Enforcement Agency Deaths in Custody Reporting Program (FDCRP) through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. The FDCRP collects information about the death of any person who dies while detained, under arrest, being arrested, or in the custody of federal law enforcement officers.

The datasets include separate files for arrest-related deaths and deaths in custody for 2016, 2017, and 2020. For the combined 2018 and 2019 collection, there is one file for arrest-related deaths and one file for deaths in custody.

BJS-sponsored virtual workshop: Approaches to Improve the Measurement of Suicide in Law Enforcement in the United States [ [link removed] ]

BJS sponsored a virtual workshop on April 25?26, 2023, presented by the National Academies' Committee on National Statistics (CNSTAT). BJS Director Alex Piquero, Principal Deputy Director Kevin Scott, and Unit Chiefs Richard Kluckow and Alexia Cooper participated. Workshop participants discussed?strategies to measure death by suicide of law enforcement and correctional officers. BJS?and CNSTAT worked together to define specific topics to be addressed and to develop the agenda. BJS funded this workshop in part to fulfill a congressional reporting requirement to collect data on law enforcement officer suicides. Director Piquero provided the opening remarks and Principal Deputy Director Scott provided the closing remarks.

Amy has nearly 20 years of experience in the federal statistical system, including 15 years as a mathematical statistician at the U.S. Census Bureau. Her BJS career began in 2019 as the unit chief for Reentry, Recidivism, and Special Projects. She is thrilled to transition to this new role, where she will coordinate data collection and analysis that involve multiple BJS units and other offices and agencies inside and outside the Justice Department.

Since 2020, she served as Supervisory Program Specialist at the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office). In this role, she oversaw a team of social science analysts and senior program specialists. She served as the COPS Office subject-matter expert on research, data analysis, and various policing topic areas.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics is cosponsoring the 2023 National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Data Detectives Camp taking place August 21?25, 2023, at NCHS headquarters in Hyattsville, Maryland. At this camp, scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will teach statistical concepts to rising 6th and 7th grade students to get them to think like a data detective by asking the right questions, collecting needed information, analyzing the data, and determining the answers. This is a free, 1-week, commuter day camp.
