WomenHeart Hosts 23rd Annual Wenger Awards
On May 1st, WomenHeart hosted our annual Wenger Awards dinner in Washington, DC. It was a festive night filled with inspiration, community and a tribute to excellence as we honored this year’s Wenger Award winners: Dr. Emelia Benjamin, Dr. Gary Gibbons, Anahad O’Connor, Dr. Stacey Rosen, and Dr. Malissa Wood. We presented the first Dr. Sharonne N. Hayes Award for Champion Excellence to WomenHeart Champion Roxanne Watson. Read more about the winners here ([link removed] The night also recognized a passing of the guard, from Board Chair Kathy Webster to Dr. Lyn Behnke, who takes over leadership of the Board of Directors this month. Thank you to all who attended and who support WomenHeart’s work. Special recognition to our Wenger Awards Sponsors, at the Diamond level: Novartis; at the Platinum level: Bristol Myers Squibb/Pfizer Alliance; at the Sliver level: Merck; and as Heart Friends: Abbott and PhRMA.
New Resources on Atrial Fibrillation
WomenHeart partnered with the Mended Hearts to develop new patient-centered resources on atrial fibrillation. We co-hosted a virtual discussion on April 20 on “What You Need to Know about AFib,” which featured Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) members Dr. Annabelle Volgman and Dr. Jeanne Poole and WomenHeart Champions Genevieve Fire-Halvorsen and Ronda Tamerlane. Watch the recording here ([link removed] We also released a discussion guide on AFib ([link removed] now available for download on the WomenHeart website. These resources were made possible with an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb/Pfizer Alliance.
Expanding the Conversation on Sleep and Heart Health
WomenHeart recently hosted a webinar focused on sleep disorders ([link removed] and their relation to heart health. Sleep expert Dr. Anne Marie Morse and cardiac nurse practitioner Lisa Maher discussed how sleep disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea relate to heart health. They shared information about how to know if you might have a sleep disorder, how to seek a diagnosis and how to talk about this with your cardiologist. This online discussion followed a webinar that WomenHeart hosted in October on the importance of sleep ([link removed] These educational resources are made possible by a grant from Jazz Pharmaceuticals.
WomenHeart Welcomes New Champions
WomenHeart graduated a new class of WomenHeart Champions on April 20, after hosting a virtual Science & Leadership Symposium. After three weeks of intense work completing self-paced courses, attending live sessions, and participating in small-group discussions, over two dozen women with heart disease celebrated the completion of their training during an online graduation ceremony. We are excited that this wonderful group of women decided to join us in our mission to improve the lives of women with and at risk of heart disease. We cannot wait to see all the wonderful things they accomplish in their communities. We thank these partners for their support of the Symposium: Bristol Myers Squibb, the Bristol Myers Squibb/Pfizer Alliance, AstraZeneca, Merck, and Cytokinetics. Visit Our Website
