Detroit was great to us. CNN and The Washington Post declared our campaign a winner.
But it wasn’t just my performance that won, it was my ideas. Before I even took the stage on Wednesday night, my immigration policy, calls for impeachment and support for police reform and reparations shaped the conversation in Tuesday’s debate.
It echoes something I said on stage—When you elect me president, it’s because you want me to lead, not follow.
I didn’t get into this race to play it safe. I got in it because Americans deserve a bold vision for our country, rooted in solid policy. They have to believe that we can be better than we’ve ever been. It’s the only way we will get people to show up and vote Donald Trump out of this White House.
Thank you for your continued support,
Julián

CNN: Winners and losers from the second night of the CNN debate
Julián Castro: Two times is a trend. And it's been two straight debates where the former San Antonio mayor has stood out -- in a good way. He probably had the line of the night, hitting back on Biden with this hammer: "It looks like one of us has learned the lessons of the past and one of us hasn't." Castro was forceful and effective on immigration and really stuck it to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on how to handle the officer who choked Eric Garner. The challenge for Castro now is to qualify for the September and October debates, which could be a heavy lift given his polling thus far. If Castro can make these next two debates, he could really make noise in the race.
The Washington Post: Winners and losers from Night 2 of the second Democratic debate
Julián Castro: Castro might have been the standout. He ranked second after the first debate when it came to who pleasantly surprised people the most, but he didn’t get really any polling bump out of it. He was strong again on Wednesday night — when he got the chance. At one point, he got in one of the most crowd-pleasing digs at Biden: “Mr. Vice President, it looks like one of us has learned the lessons of the past, and one of us hasn’t,” he said while talking about immigration. “. . . What we need are politicians who actually have some guts on this issue.”
