Hi ,
Here’s how much I’ve depended on meteorologist Denis Phillips over the years: Not only did he get me through hurricanes threatening Tampa Bay, he also got me through hurricanes in another state entirely.
My daughter went to college in New Orleans during a brutal stretch of storms. Denis’ son also lived there at the time, and when New Orleans was in the cone, I watched to see how Denis was advising his son — so I’d know how to advise my daughter.
I know many of you trust him the same way. As a longtime journalist and editor in local news, I have followed him for years in his role as chief meteorologist for Tampa Bay’s WFTS-Channel 28. I recently joined ([link removed]) the Poynter Institute in a position that includes overseeing public events, so it’s a happy coincidence that the first program I’m involved with is an intimate conversation with Denis about his weather career and connection to the community.
Poynter at The Straz is presenting “An Evening with Denis Phillips” on Friday, May 12, at 8 p.m. at the Straz Center in Tampa. We hope you’ll join us to hear more about the big storms Denis has covered, Tampa Bay’s changing weather, his thoughts on the upcoming hurricane season, Rule No. 7 and more.
Don’t miss the chance to ask Denis the questions you’ve always wondered about during the audience Q&A following his conversation with Kelly McBride, Poynter’s senior vice president and national expert on journalism ethics. Also on tap will be Denis discussing weather events, climate change and communicating with the public with a panel of special guests. And there’s an exclusive VIP meet-and-greet add-on session with Denis before the show.
If Denis is your trusted weather authority too, I hope you’ll join us for a fun and informative evening at The Straz on May 12.
