Moments ago, Republican legislative leaders announced that they intend to pass a ban on abortion care after 12 weeks.
This is an egregious, unacceptable attack on the women of our state. As governor, I have done everything possible to protect reproductive health care access, but now Republicans are emboldened by their new supermajorities in the House and Senate.
We are going to keep fighting tooth and nail to keep this bill from passing, and we will work to press Republicans in swing districts who promised they would not pass extreme abortion bans. But we know this shows us that the next elections are more important than ever. We have to break the supermajorities, take back the legislature, and secure Democratic victories at the statewide level. I’ll spend the next year and a half working to do just that — but I need your help.

Republicans have gerrymandered our state to ensure that they will hold onto power no matter the will of the people — then, they can avoid any kind of accountability for their attacks on our freedom.
They don’t care that the majority of voters here in NC and across the country support reproductive rights. They don’t care that this legislation will cause untold harm to patients who rely on care in North Carolina.
The far-right GOP has made it clear: They do not care about us. They care only about enacting the most radical elements of their agenda that they can get away with.
And this is just the start.
We know that there are extremist Republicans here in NC who support total abortion bans. We know that our best way to stop them will come at the ballot box next year.
