CNN: “The Supreme Court may completely hollow out the Voting Rights Act by 2024”

Unfortunately, team, it’s not an exaggeration.

FIRST:
The Supreme Court’s disastrous 2013 decision in Shelby County gutted Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act by eliminating the formula for the preclearance requirements for new election laws in states with histories of racial discrimination.

THEN:
Earlier this year, Republicans urged the Court to dismantle Section 2 of the VRA, which protects communities of color against racially gerrymandered maps that dilute their voting power.

NOW:
The future of voting rights – and the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement hinges on the Supreme Court’s upcoming ruling in Allen v. Milligan.

And that’s not all. We’re also awaiting a decision in Moore v. Harper, where Republican lawmakers have asked the Court to consider a fringe, right-wing legal theory that could pave the way for:

❌ Purges of voters from voting rolls
❌ Cuts to early voting & vote-by-mail options
❌ Discriminatory barriers to voting access
❌ Fewer protections against voter intimidation
❌ Rigged voting maps – even if those maps violate a state’s constitution
❌ GOP legislatures undermining legitimate election results

Team, we don’t know how the Court will rule in Milligan or Moore – but we do know that no matter what happens, we must be prepared to continue fighting for voting rights, fair maps, and a strong democracy state-by-state across the country. Will you pitch in today to help make sure the NDRC is ready for whatever comes our way?
