The National Student Nurses’ Association has appointed of Kenya D. Williams, EdD, RN, RP, as executive director beginning August 1. Currently its deputy executive director, Williams started her leadership path with NSNA some 18 years ago as the Missouri Student Nurses’ Association St. Louis Area District officer, going on to be elected as the first African American woman to serve as president of the NSNA and, later, its foundation.
While health care organizations have improved in five of six measures of quality set out in 2001 by the then-named Institute of Medicine—aiming for efficiency, effectiveness, safety, timeliness, and being patient-centered— they’ve struggled with the last, equitability. In a blog on the Campaign website, Mila Sprouse, EdD, MSN, RN, shows 2021 survey results from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement that suggest ways health organizations can better support equity goals.
Professional nursing organizations need to coordinate with each other to address the social determinants of health and improve health equity for all. That’s the top recommendation in the Future of Nursing 2020-2030 report—and creating that shared agenda is the purpose of a May 10 webinar that includes representatives from the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations, Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations, and the National League for Nursing.
Retired? Don’t be, says Jefferson Health, which is implementing its Nurse Emeritus Program in its 18 hospitals in southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. The program, which started in November, is filling roles at three emeritus nursing levels: clinical, specialty, and as leaders. To support research that identifies the systemic root causes of U.S. health inequities, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation invites applications for its Health Equity Scholars for Action 2023, research grants for those with terminal degrees and a position at an accredited school. Grants will be awarded “to address the challenges that those from historically underrepresented backgrounds typically experience and help them overcome obstacles to earning tenure.” Deadline: May 31.
Learn about the state of diversity, equity, and inclusion in academic nursing and the role of diversity officers in nursing education and practice at American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s 2024 Diversity Leadership Institute. The five-month program offers the opportunity for participants “to develop a diversity plan designed to drive excellence and meet local needs.” Deadline: June 30.
The Aging and Disability Business Institute at USAging invites community-based organizations that are partnering with health care entities such as hospitals and health plans to apply for the John A. Hartford Foundation 2023 Business Innovation Award. The award is intended to draw national attention to innovative strategies from the aging and disability networks and inspire others to replicate those ideas. Deadline: May 5.
Since 2019, the de Beaumont Foundation has recognized leaders who are changing the face of public health in creative and innovative ways with its 40-Under-40 in Public Health list. That program is now open for nominations for those whose equity-focused entrepreneurial spirit have earned them a chance for the foundation’s two-year professional development program. Deadline: May 17.
The Camden Coalition invites all to spread word of their work in the field of complex care at the November 1-3 Putting Care at the Center 2023 conference. Lead a workshop, or present a poster or table at the Beehive, the place for emerging knowledge, experience, and strategy. Deadline remains June 15.
The Root Cause Coalition calls for nominations for its 2023 Health Justice Award, which honors organizations that have successfully implemented a program to reduce health—matching the coalition’s mission of collaborating across sectors to improve and achieve health equity. Winners will receive $25,000 and be recognized during the coalition’s December 3–5 national summit. Deadline: June 19.
