John, yesterday was the first anniversary of the leaked eventual decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
This campaign to restrict (and ultimately end) abortion has been more than 50 years in the making.
House Republicans have already begun the next phase of the assault on women and bodily autonomy. Their expressed legislative priorities include codifying the Hyde Amendment (1976), as well as drawing attention to "attacks" on anti-abortion centers. Several states have enacted 6-week bans, and have left out exceptions for rape or incest.
All of this focus is, yet again, a distraction from the real issues. The fear-mongering of "tax-payer funded abortions" is still in use by the Republican party even though the Hyde Amendment prevents federal funding from being used for abortion services.
The more pressing issue is that restrictive reproductive healthcare policies kill women. Since the Supreme Court's ruling, we have been inundated with evidence that these laws are not precise enough in their language and leave doctors hesitant to provide life-saving care. Some laws are going so far as to consider life beginning at conception, leaving fertility clinics at a similar crossroads for fear of being charged with murder.
The conversations around abortion are nuanced and complex and best left up to who it affects the most: the patients. Can you chip in towards the cause today and help elect lawmakers who believe in the freedom of choice? |
John, we know that these issues are not just black and white, and we know you do as well. Thank you for supporting us and for standing for the right to choose.
