The exceptional stories of Macomb County's most devoted volunteers were celebrated last month at the Macomb County Volunteer Recognition Reception held at Freedom Hill. Organized by the Macomb County Board of Commissioners, this program pays tribute to those who have generously contributed their time and energy to make a lasting, positive impact on their community. Through their inspirational endeavors and invaluable services these volunteers promote unity and resilience among the residents of Macomb County.
Each year, Commissioners select publicly nominated individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Macomb County. These nominees are acknowledged for their generosity, commitment, and dedication of their time.In addition to the district awards, the Older Adult Advisory Committee bestows the Senior Volunteer of the Year award to a distinguished senior volunteer who has made a significant impact on the lives of others.

First Annual Student Government Day
AM
After the snow postponed the originally scheduled date in January, the Macomb County Board of Commissioners held its first annual Student Government Day on March 16, 2023. The event aimed to provide students from Macomb County schools with an opportunity to learn about the purpose and mechanics of county-level government and to participate in a way that would enhance their understanding of how local government works.
The first requirement to participate in the Macomb County Board of Commissioners Student Government Day Program was an essay contest. The contest was open to all Macomb County students at public and private schools in grades 9 - 12. Students were asked to write an essay on the topic, "Why do you think school violence is increasing, and what can students do to prevent it?"
Students who submitted an essay were invited to attend the program at the Board of Commissioners' office in downtown Mount Clemens. The day's agenda began with a welcome address and a tour of the Board Office, followed by a presentation on the duties and responsibilities of a Commissioner. Students had the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session with the Commissioners, participated in small group discussions with them and then were able to act as Commissioners in a mock meeting.
The Board of Commissioners awarded the $1,000 scholarship to Megan Mangalathet from the Utica Academy for International Studies, the winner of the essay contest. The Board of Commissioners had partnered with Advancing Macomb to offer the scholarship and thanks them for their generosity and support of this program.?

Green Schools
Green Schools Celebration
The Macomb County Board of Commissioners recently recognized 77 schools that achieved Green Schools status for the 2022-2023 program cycle. The awards ceremony, which took place at the Macomb Intermediate School District building, highlighted the schools' commitment to pursuing eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable practices through curriculum choices and school activities. The recognized schools not only remained committed to green education, but also showed their creativity in implementing the 'green' curriculum, demonstrating the deep-rooted nature of the Macomb County Green Schools program.
The Macomb County Green Schools program, initiated by Public Act 146 in 2006 and coordinated by the Macomb County Board of Commissioners since 2008, encourages Pre K-12 students within the county to participate in activities that promote environmental protection and the preservation of natural resources. The program sponsors schools that demonstrate a commitment to sustainable efforts.
logo
As part of the program, students can design and submit logos that represent their connection to the environment. From those submitted, one logo is selected to represent the program for the upcoming school year. This year?s winning logo was designed by Morgan McCloud from Richards Middle School. Her logo shows people working towards a greener future and she chose to use watercolors because they looked more natural.
To receive Green Schools status a school must provide a description of how they have performed at least ten of the activities listed in the program guidelines.?

MAC
Commissioners Attend Michigan Counties 2023 Legislative Conference
Lucido
Last month, several Commissioners attended the Michigan Association of Counties (MAC) Legislative Conference in Lansing and participated in informative breakout sessions covering topics such as the electric vehicle industry, opioid funding from the National Settlement and the Open Meetings Act. These sessions provided a platform for meaningful dialogue, allowing Commissioners to exchange ideas, learn from experts and explore potential solutions to challenges faced by their communities.?
We also extend our congratulations to our very own Commissioner Sarah Lucido for being elected to serve on the MAC Board! As a vital voice for counties at the state and federal levels, MAC provides legislative support on key issues. Commissioner Lucido was elected during the special elections on April 25th joining four other newly-elected members. We look forward to your leadership and continued representation of Macomb County!
