It's been a year since the Dobbs opinion was leaked. Here's where things stand in our fight to restore abortion rights nationwide Indivisibles,
One year ago today, the draft of the Dobbs decision that would overturn Roe v. Wade was leaked. In the intervening months, tens of millions of people have lost access to abortion care -- an established right for nearly the previous fifty years.
We've seen Republican state legislatures across the country enact abortion bans, even resurrecting archaic state laws from the 1800s that prohibit abortion. And just months after the court overturned Roe, MAGA Republicans in Congress introduced a bill to ban abortion nationwide.
The one silver lining in the past year has been the groundswell of grassroots energy fighting back against the MAGA assault on abortion rights. Voters in several states rejected abortion bans on the ballot, passed amendments enshrining reproductive rights into state constitutions, and defeated Trump-endorsed, anti-abortion candidates in swing states, including Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Nevada.
And just last month, Indivisibles mobilized to help elect Janet Protasiewicz and flip the Wisconsin Supreme Court ahead of a session that will likely include a case determining the status of abortion access in Wisconsin.
People are mobilized and fighting back, but we know MAGA Republicans won't give up, no matter how unpopular their position is. Last month, Trump-appointed Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Texas issued a decision that would have restricted access to the abortion drug mifepristone nationwide. For now, mifepristone remains FDA-approved and federally legal while we await a ruling from the Supreme Court that will likely come sometime over the next year.
Even so, Kacsmaryk's ruling makes it clear that access to abortion is under assault everywhere. MAGA judges can reach across state lines and overrule the will of voters in red states AND blue states who’ve fought to keep abortion legal.
To restore abortion rights for everyone in the country and stem the tide of Republican-imposed restrictions, we need action at the federal level. That's why Indivisible Action's north star for the next two years is restoring our Democratic trifecta.
Together, we'll win back the House, keep the presidency, and replace Kyrsten Sinema with a true pro-choice Democrat. Then, we'll abolish the filibuster and codify Roe. But the fight won't end there. We'll push Democrats to expand the Supreme Court and reform the judiciary so that MAGA judges will no longer threaten our fundamental rights.
None of this will be easy, but it's our best shot at restoring abortion access and building lasting protections for reproductive rights. Election day might be a ways away, but the hard work of rebuilding our trifecta is already underway. Here are two things you can do today:
- Pitch in. Our work isn't possible without the support of grassroots donors. Make a contribution today to ensure this movement has what it needs to build a pro-choice trifecta.
- Read our abortion birddogging guide and put it into action. We need Indivisibles to show up and make every vulnerable Republican who brought us to this point answer for their actions. We’ll help make their panicked answers go viral for all their voters to hear.
The last year has been horrific in so many ways, but our sadness, rage, and resolve are shared by so many. The country is now 10-15% more pro-choice than it was one year ago today -- that’s millions of people we can activate around the next election to help elect pro-choice leaders and restore our rights.
If you’re ready to make an early investment in that work -- truly the most important thing we can do in this moment to protect abortion rights nationwide -- please chip in today.
