‘SO FAR, SO GOOD WITH SEN, JD VANCE’ (Crain’s Cleveland Business) -- The arbitrary but enduring 100-day mark of assessing accomplishment in the political world arrived last week for Ohio's new U.S. senator, JD Vance.

Our early takeaway: There are signs he will be an effective advocate for Ohio…

We're encouraged, for instance, by the role he has played in the wake of the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, working with his Democratic colleague, Sen. Sherrod Brown, to introduce the Railway Safety Act of 2023, which would make overdue updates to the nation's freight rail safety and maintenance…

Vance has done his part, both in terms of producing serious legislation and in visiting East Palestine to advocate for local residents and to continue to call attention to ecological damage stemming from the derailment.

A lot of politicians just demagogued this issue. It speaks well of Vance that he has worked to try to make needed reforms happen…

‘HE’S WILLING TO WORK ACROSS THE AISLE AND ISN’T RELUCTANT TO STAND UP TO CORPORATE LOBBIES’ (Cincinnati Enquirer) – The toxic train derailment in eastern Ohio forced J.D. Vance to get his Senate career on track quickly…

Vance first went to the community of fewer than 5,000 people on the Pennsylvania border Feb. 16, returned the next week with former President Donald Trump, and was back in March. East Palestine seemed familiar to the native of Middletown, with similarities such as Appalachian people like those he grew up with, working-class feel, and railroad tracks in residential and commercial areas…

He was sharply critical of the Joe Biden administration response, suggesting at one point that East Palestine was "too white, too rural and too conservative" to draw its attention. However, the Republican freshman soon found himself working in unison with the liberal Democrat Sherrod Brown, a third-term senator who was holding elective office a decade before Vance, 38, was born.

…he has shown he’s willing to work across the aisle and isn’t reluctant to stand up to corporate lobbies…

"If you’re not a jerk, if you try to get to know people and understand where they’re coming from, there are definitely ways you can work with people," said Vance, who marked his 100th day in office April 13.

‘WE HAVE THIS INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF TALENT IN OUR YOUNG PEOPLE’ (Spectrum News) -- U.S. Senator JD Vance paid a special visit today to a career tech school in Southwest Ohio.

He toured all parts of the campus, including the culinary arts, electrical trades, auto technician programs. Staff were excited to have him on campus and showcase all that they have to offer. Senator Vance said he was impressed with not only the facility but the work of the students as well.

“We have this incredible amount of talent in our young people and this school is figuring out innovative ways of marshaling that talent and getting these kids the skills that they need so that they can succeed in the future,” he said.

‘WRIGHT-PATT IS A GREAT ECONOMIC ASSET FOR US’(Dayton 24/7 Now) -- Ohio Senator JD Vance visited Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on Monday, in order to speak with leaders of the intelligence committee in the United States Air Force, and Space Force.

When Vance spoke to the media on Monday afternoon, he said that he had a very good, yet very sobering visit at Wright-Patt…

"Obviously you know Wright-Patt is a great economic asset for us here in southwestern Ohio. We want to make sure that we continue to have a well staffed and well supported Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and I think we continue to make sure that we do that," said Vance.

‘WHILE THE RADICAL LEFT CONTINUES THEIR OBSESSION WITH HARASSAING DONALD TRUMP, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING’(The Ironton Tribune) -- Today’s indictment of President Trump is political persecution masquerading as law. Donald Trump is the former President of the United States, the leader of our nation’s political opposition, and the presumptive Republican nominee in 2024. Alvin Bragg’s decision to indict him is blatant election interference and a direct assault on the tens of millions of Americans who support him.

To make matters worse, this entire charade is predicated on an unprecedented, doomed-to-fail legal theory and a baseless misdemeanor charge from seven years ago.

While the radical left continues their obsession with harassing Donald Trump, the American people are suffering. Families are struggling to put food on the table, violent crime is running rampant in our cities, and thousands have been poisoned by the fentanyl pouring across our southern border.

Instead of working to improve the lives of the Americans they are supposed to represent, the ruling party is focused on kneecapping their greatest threat in the next election. The American people will see this for exactly what it is: a grave miscarriage of justice.

‘WE’VE GOT TO PROVIDE BETTER RAIL SAFETY IN THIS COUNTRY’ (WKBN) -- Ohio Senator JD Vance expressed concern over the long-term health effects from the East Palestine train derailment and says he is working with several federal agencies to make sure that East Palestine is safe.

Long-term, Vance is also working on the Railway Safety Act of 2023. The bill needs to get marked up in the committee. Vance and Senator Sherrod Brown introduced the bill back in March.

“We’ve got to provide better rail safety in this country,” Vance said. “We can’t have these terrible train crashes where we don’t notify the firefighters about what’s in these trains, you have to install more safety detectors to make the train crashes less likely. Really some common sense stuff.”

Senator Vance is hopeful the markup hearing will happen next month and that the Senate will vote on the bill by June.

‘ENSURE THE GREAT LAKES ARE PROTECTED NOT JUST TODAY, BUT FOR GENERATIONS TO COME’ (Cleveland.com) -- Newly elected Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio earlier this year said that he will do all he can “to ensure the Great Lakes are protected not just today, but for generations to come.” He’s also agreed to co-chair the Senate Great Lakes Task Force. Sen. Vance’s predecessor, Sen. Rob Portman, was known for his bipartisan approach and strong support for the Great Lakes. We hope that Sen. Vance is on the way to following in his footsteps as a Great Lakes champion.

‘ENGLISH IS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THIS COUNTRY’ (Lima News) -- U.S. Sen. JD Vance, an Ohio Republican, is introducing legislation that would establish English as the official language of the United States, taking up a cause that Republicans have repeatedly pursued without success in past Congresses…

“This commonsense legislation recognizes an inherent truth: English is the language of this country,” Vance’s statement said. “The English language has been a cornerstone of American culture for over 250 years. It is far past time for Congress to codify its place into law, which is exactly what this bill does.”
